Gym Skincare: What to Do Before, During, and After a Workout

The gym is good for your body but can be rough on your skin.

Sweat, bacteria, equipment contact, showers — each presents challenges. Handle them poorly and you get breakouts, irritation, and infections. Handle them well and your skin stays healthy while you get fit.

Here's the complete gym skincare protocol.

Before the Gym

Skip Heavy Products

What to avoid:

  • Thick moisturizers (trap sweat)
  • Sunscreen if training indoors (if outdoors, apply)
  • Any new products you haven't tested

Why: Heavy products mix with sweat and can clog pores. Your face needs to breathe during exercise.

What You Can Wear

Light moisturizer: If your skin needs it, a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula is fine.

Mineral sunscreen: If working out outdoors, mineral (zinc oxide) sunscreens stay on better than chemical formulas.

Apply Deodorant

You'll sweat. Plan accordingly.

The Estate applied before workout handles body odor without aluminum.

Consider Your Hair

If using styling products:

  • Tie hair back to keep products off face
  • Skip products entirely if working out early
  • Headband to absorb sweat before it hits forehead

Product + sweat running down face = breakouts along hairline.

Wash Your Hands

Before touching your face (which you'll do subconsciously), start with clean hands.

During the Workout

Don't Touch Your Face

Gym equipment is contaminated with:

  • Bacteria
  • Fungi
  • Other people's sweat
  • Cleaning chemicals

Touching equipment then touching your face transfers all of this.

Strategies:

  • Keep a clean towel for face-only use
  • Be conscious of face-touching habit
  • Use towel or sleeve to wipe sweat instead of hands

Wipe Equipment Before Use

Not just for hygiene — the chemicals in gym wipes can irritate skin. Wiping first reduces what you're exposed to.

Let Sweat Flow

Don't: Constantly wipe sweat away. This can irritate skin.

Do: Let minor sweat do its thing. Wipe when excessive or dripping into eyes.

Sweat itself isn't bad for skin — it's even mildly antimicrobial. The problem is when it mixes with bacteria and sits for hours.

Avoid Tight Headbands

Constant pressure + sweat = "athletic acne" along the headband line.

If you need a headband, use moisture-wicking fabric and wash it after every use.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration affects skin:

  • Drink water throughout workout
  • Don't wait until you're thirsty

Hydrated from within supports hydration externally.

After the Workout

This is where most mistakes happen.

Shower ASAP

The sooner you shower post-workout, the better:

  • Bacteria multiply in sweat
  • Prolonged sweat exposure can irritate
  • Clogged pores develop when gunk sits

Ideal: Shower immediately after

Acceptable: Within 30-60 minutes

Problematic: Hours later, sweat dried on skin

The Post-Gym Shower

Temperature: Warm, not hot. Hot water strips oils and irritates post-exercise skin.

Body: Use a quality body wash or the Lufa Bar — exfoliating while cleansing removes sweat, dead skin, and bacteria effectively.

Face: Gentle cleanser. Sweat doesn't require harsh cleansing.

Duration: Relatively quick. Long steamy showers aren't necessary.

Dry Properly

Pat dry: Don't rub vigorously

Fully dry: Especially in creases (underarms, groin) where moisture breeds bacteria

Clean towel: Gym towels used for wiping sweat shouldn't touch your face

Post-Shower Care

Face:

  1. Gentle cleanser (if not already washed in shower)
  2. Moisturizer
  3. Sunscreen (if heading outside)

Body:

  1. Deodorant (The Estate)
  2. Moisturizer if needed (especially in winter)

Fresh Clothes

Putting sweaty clothes back on defeats the purpose:

  • Brings bacteria back to clean skin
  • Causes chafing
  • Prolongs the "gym environment" on your skin

Always have clean clothes for after.

Common Gym Skin Problems

Bacne (Back Acne)

Cause: Sweat + tight clothing + bacteria + friction

Prevention:

  • Shower immediately after workout
  • Use exfoliating body wash on back
  • Wear moisture-wicking fabrics
  • Clean clothes every workout

Treatment: If persistent, benzoyl peroxide body wash

Folliculitis

What it is: Infected hair follicles, looks like small pimples

Cause: Bacteria entering follicles, often from contaminated equipment or wet environments

Prevention:

  • Shower after workout
  • Don't share towels
  • Sit on your own towel
  • Keep razors clean if shaving

Treatment: Usually resolves with better hygiene. Persistent cases need medical attention.

Fungal Infections

Includes: Athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm

Cause: Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments (gym showers, sweaty shoes)

Prevention:

  • Flip-flops in gym showers
  • Dry feet completely
  • Fresh socks daily
  • Antifungal powder if prone

Treatment: Antifungal creams, usually over-the-counter

Acne Mechanica

What it is: Breakouts caused by friction, pressure, heat

Common locations: Where tight clothes or equipment contact skin

Prevention:

  • Looser-fitting workout clothes when possible
  • Clean equipment that contacts face (helmets, straps)
  • Shower after

Chafing

Cause: Skin rubbing against skin or clothing during movement

Prevention:

  • Moisture-wicking fabrics
  • Anti-chafe products
  • Proper-fitting workout clothes

Treatment: Keep area dry, use healing balms

Gym Skincare Kit

Keep these in your gym bag:

Essential:

  • Cleanser
  • Moisturizer
  • Deodorant (The Estate)
  • Clean towel
  • Fresh clothes

Optional:

  • Face wipes (for quick refresh if can't shower immediately)
  • Travel-size products
  • Flip-flops for showers
  • Small sunscreen (if heading outside after)

Cardio vs. Weights

Cardio Concerns

  • More sweat
  • More face-touching (wiping sweat)
  • Longer duration of sweat exposure

Adjust by: Extra attention to avoiding face-touching, quick cleanse after

Weight Training Concerns

  • Equipment contact
  • Straps, grips, gloves harbor bacteria
  • Different sweat patterns

Adjust by: Wiping equipment, washing hands, cleaning personal equipment regularly

The Morning vs. Evening Workout

Morning Workout

After: Full morning routine

  • Cleanser
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen

You'll cleanse again at night as usual.

Evening Workout

After: Night routine

  • Cleanser
  • Night moisturizer or treatment

One cleanse is enough — don't cleanse before and after evening workouts unless very oily.

The Bottom Line

Gym skincare isn't complicated:

Before:

  • Light or no products on face
  • Deodorant applied
  • Clean hands

During:

  • Don't touch your face
  • Use your own clean towel
  • Let sweat flow (mostly)

After:

  • Shower promptly
  • Gentle cleanse
  • Moisturize
  • Fresh clothes

The gym doesn't have to wreck your skin. Simple precautions, consistent routine, prompt showering — that's the formula.

Your body gets stronger. Your skin stays healthy. Win-win.
